The origin of the Wah Lum Tam Tui system must be traced until the Wah Lum temple, in the Ping To district, Shandong province, China. The abbot of the monastery, master Ching Yeung, taught the Praying Mantis Kung Fu techniques to Lee Kwan Shan, who stayed there for more than ten years. After completing his training, Lee Kwan Shan, who already was an accomplished martial artist before training with Ching Yeung, left Shandong and started to teach Kung Fu.

His last disciple was the young Chan Pui, with six years old. His training with master Lee was very intense, strict and with strong emphasis on the basics. After the death of his master, Chan Pui continued the training with his older Kung Fu brothers, mainly Chan Wan Ching, until 1968 when he moved to Boston, USA.

Nowadays, Chan Pui is the grandmaster of Wah Lum system, and the introducer of this system in the West. He is also one of the biggest authorities in Chinese traditional weapons in USA, author of several books on the Wah Lum system. Grandmaster Chan Pui has appeared in magazines, periodicals and tv shows around the world.

In 1980 he built the Wah Lum Temple of USA, in Orlando, Florida: a place where people could dedicate themselves exclusively to the Wah Lum Kung Fu, in an adequate environment. The Wah Lum system has several schools spread around the world, being one of the most traditional and biggest schools in the present time.
The Wah Lum Kung Fu basic training consists of:
- Kung Fu basic exercises (strength and flexibility exercises, and basic techniques)
- Empty hands forms (patterned sequences of attacks and defenses)
- Weapons forms (sequences with Chinese traditional weapons)
- Self-defense (application of the techniques of the forms)
- Sparring (combat against a non-cooperative adversary, with protection gear)
